How to use this calculator

Choose your measurement system (imperial or metric), enter your pre-pregnancy weight and height, and select whether you are expecting a single baby or twins. You can also enter your current gestational week to see a reference cumulative gain range for how far along you are. The calculator shows your pre-pregnancy BMI and the IOM 2009 recommended total and weekly gain ranges for your BMI category.

Understanding your result

The recommended gain ranges come from the Institute of Medicine's 2009 guidelines, which are the most widely referenced in clinical practice. They are based on population studies and designed to support healthy outcomes for most pregnancies — not as a strict target for every individual. Your pre-pregnancy BMI is shown as context only. It is never presented as a verdict. Weekly gain guidance is most relevant from the second trimester onwards; first trimester gain is typically minimal.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight should I gain in pregnancy?

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) 2009 guidelines recommend: 28–40 lbs for underweight BMI, 25–35 lbs for healthy weight, 15–25 lbs for overweight, and 11–20 lbs for obese pre-pregnancy BMI. For twins, ranges are higher: 37–54 lbs for healthy weight BMI, for example. These are population-level reference ranges, not individual prescriptions.

Are these ranges right for everyone?

No. The IOM guidelines are population-level guidance and a useful starting point, but individual targets depend on your health history, any complications, and your provider's assessment. Always work with your midwife, OB, or healthcare provider to set a personalised target for your pregnancy.

Is this medical advice?

No. This calculator provides estimates for informational purposes only. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before making decisions about your health.
